Just Clothes - POP-UP EVENT in TOKYO

"Just Clothes"

― Simply garments, and nothing besides.

Thank you, sincerely, for your continued patronage.

VIEUX ET NOUVEAU is pleased to announce a solo pop-up event, to be held over two days in Ebisu, Tokyo.

This time, we have set no theme.

For the last event we raised a question — what makes a garment good? — and offered our own answer to it. Yet we find ourselves thinking that setting out a proper subject each and every time may not always be the better course. And so, on this occasion, we have chosen to declare nothing at all.

What awaits you is simply clothes.

No grand narrative, no difficult context. Only the garments we thought good, and wished to bring with us, hanging there on the rail. Two days of nothing more than that.

At the heart of it, as ever, military and workwear. Garments made to be used, pared of everything unnecessary, and which — somewhere along the way — became beautiful.

Alongside them, the odd regular piece whose cut you ought to recognise, yet whose colour or making is somehow unlike any other. And archives from established houses that sit awkwardly within any era or genre.

Countries, decades and price ranges all differ. Set side by side, there may be little in the way of coherence.

We think that may be no bad thing. If each piece is good in itself, we suspect there is little need for a word to bind them together.

And one thing more.

Here, every one of them is simply a garment.

Issued by an army, made by a house whose name is known, or sewn by hands that left no record — once they hang on the rail, the difference between them is slight. Set the titles aside for a moment, and consider each simply as a garment: is it good, for you? We should be glad if you would look at them in that way.

There is no need to come prepared, and no need at all to speak knowledgeably about any of it.

You are, of course, most welcome to try something on and leave without buying a thing.

Only look at the garments before you, as your heart takes you.

If, among them, you happen upon some small discovery — "so this is the colour I care for" — or some small venture — "not what I would usually choose, but I should like to wear this" — then that alone would please us greatly.

Selected items on display will be posted to our Instagram in the days leading up to the event.

Please do drop in, without ceremony. We look forward, most sincerely, to meeting you.
