What Makes It Good - POP-UP EVENT in TOKYO

"What Makes It Good"

― What is it that makes a garment truly good?

Thank you, sincerely, for your continued patronage.
To all those who pay our shop a visit from day to day — our deepest gratitude.

VIEUX ET NOUVEAU is pleased to announce its first solo pop-up event, to be held over two days in Ebisu, Tokyo.
For a shop whose presence is principally online, the chance to meet our clients in person and exchange a few words across a single garment is, to us, of the very greatest value.

The theme of this event is "What Makes It Good ― What is it that makes a garment truly good?"

Not because the market sets a high price upon it. Not because the moment happens to favour this particular vintage.
Setting aside such external yardsticks, we shall present only those pieces that — by our own eye alone — we can stand behind as truly "good."

"What is a good garment?"

It is a question to which we are still seeking our own answer.
Unbound by brand, by era, by country of origin or by genre — by any pre-existing framework or by the valuations the world has assigned — we have considered each piece in earnest: its cloth, its tailoring, its bearing, and whether it might stand quietly beside the life of the one who wears it.

The selection ranges from archives known to all, through to anonymous pieces whose maker has not so much as left a name.
Some are rare vintage seldom encountered even within Japan; others, the most universal of garments — the kind that settles quietly into the rhythm of daily life.

What they share is only our own conviction that "this is a truly good garment."

Anchored in military and workwear, ranging across the great pieces of various European nations, archives drawn from luxury houses, and good regulars of more recent vintage besides.
A selection that crosses countries, eras and labels, held together only by the gaze of our shop. We would be most pleased if you would take this chance to handle them, one by one, in person.

We shall continue, in our own quiet way, to ask why we exist.

Why do we handle these garments?
Why do we place this particular piece in the hands of this particular customer?

One small answer, perhaps, we hope to find in conversation with you.

On the day, alongside the pieces currently available on our online shop, you will find fresh vintage acquired specifically for this event, and a curated selection of pieces the owner himself felt simply must be encountered in person.

Please take this opportunity to inspect, with your own hands, each piece that you would otherwise see only through a screen.

Selected items on display will be posted to our Instagram in the days leading up to the event.

We look forward, most sincerely, to meeting you in person.

The event details are set out below; we kindly ask those planning to attend to take a moment to read through them.
