A French-made black wool work gilet, estimated from the 1910s.
A special acquisition.
Twill-woven black wool—a first for us, if we're being honest. Though called wool, the pile is short, making it wearable across seasons beyond summer.
The front is constructed in black wool, the back in black moleskin, and the collar binding in black velour. We've rarely encountered a piece that employs such luxurious materials with such generosity.
Two flap-less pockets sit at the front, with six buttons forming the closure. The absence of a chest pocket and the irregular spacing of the front buttons—these details are remarkably uncommon.
Black pairs effortlessly with nearly anything, making this a piece worth keeping close.
Proportioned generously for a gilet, it accommodates a broad range of builds. The back features a cinch strap, allowing for modest adjustment should the need arise.
There are missing buttons and small holes, yet considering its age, the fact that a garment from a century ago remains in wearable condition feels almost miraculous. No significant damage mars the piece, and it remains entirely serviceable.
Items of this caliber seldom surface. Should you have been searching for such a piece, this may well be the moment.
