A special acquisition.
The Wehrmacht — the unified armed forces of Nazi Germany — comprised three branches: the Heer (Army), Kriegsmarine (Navy), and Luftwaffe (Air Force). It existed as the state's official military institution from 1935 to 1945.
Following the First World War, the Treaty of Versailles imposed severe restrictions on German rearmament, particularly prohibiting military aviation. Yet these constraints were systematically circumvented. In 1935, conscription was reintroduced and the Luftwaffe publicly announced, bringing military expansion into the open as a matter of national policy.
Thus constituted, the Wehrmacht functioned as the military instrument of Nazi expansionism, its role becoming decisive with the outbreak of the Second World War.
In the initial phases — from the invasion of Poland (1939) through the Blitzkrieg in the West (1940) — coordinated mechanised and aerial operations accelerated the pace of campaign. Yet as the war lengthened, strategic advantage eroded through successive reversals: the failure to secure air superiority over Britain (1940), the drawn-out attrition of the Russo-German War, and the slow exhaustion of resources.
Following Germany's unconditional surrender in May 1945, the Allied powers proceeded with disarmament and occupation. On 20 August 1946, Kontrollratsgesetz Nr. 34 (Control Council Law No. 34) formally dissolved and abolished the Wehrmacht.
Postwar Germany entered a period without armed forces, then, within the Cold War framework, rearmament proceeded along separate paths. West Germany established the Bundeswehr in 1955; East Germany organised the Nationale Volksarmee in 1956. Both were constituted as new forces, distinct in structure and ideology from the Wehrmacht.
German military dress of that era was refined through a division of labour integrating function with visual presence.
In terms of design, specialists such as the artist Karl Diebitsch and graphic designer Walter Heck shaped the aesthetic of uniforms — including the SS black dress — standardising silhouette, colour palette, and ornamentation. Meanwhile, manufacturing was entrusted to multiple contractors, including Hugo Boss, who managed mass production and quality control under official specification.
The common misconception equates design with Hugo Boss; the reality was a division between design authority (government and designers) and manufacturing (suppliers).
Among German military garments, we present the M43 Tropical Field Jacket — issued and worn in tropical theaters during the Second World War.
This jacket is known to have been worn by the Deutsches Afrikakorps.
The DAK was an expeditionary force of the German armed forces, formed in February 1941 to support Italian operations in North Africa.
Under the command of Erwin Rommel — known as the "Desert Fox" — the DAK conducted intense operations across the scorched lands of Libya, Egypt, and Tunisia against Allied forces. Defeat at the Battle of El Alamein in 1942 marked the turning point toward strategic disadvantage. Forced to withdraw toward Tunisia, the DAK finally surrendered to Allied forces on 13 May 1943.
Given the M43 designation, this example likely dates from the DAK's final phase, or from campaign across North Africa and southern European theaters.
This is our first acquisition of such a piece — extraordinarily rare. An item one would scarcely encounter in Japan.
The first distinction lies in its orthodox four-pocket configuration, characteristic of German field dress.
Flapped pockets symmetrically placed at the chest, with matching flapped pockets at the hem — this layout faithfully adheres to the grammar of the German military field jacket. Each flap is secured with buttons bearing the distinctive pebbled texture unique to German specification; these buttons impart an unmistakable military character to the garment's overall expression.
Examination of the reverse side of the front buttons reveals S-hooks — S-shaped metal fittings — securing the buttons to the fabric. This is a fastening method peculiar to German military dress, distinct from conventional sewn buttons and profoundly characteristic of German engineering.
The fact that such refinement extends to every detail attests that this is an authentic issued garment.
The cuffs are button-fastened, employing paper buttons distinctive to German military issue — fibrous material compressed into form rather than metal, a detail that speaks to the material constraints of wartime production.
Interior inspection reveals cotton sateen reinforcement patches carefully stitched throughout, reflecting consideration for both tactile comfort and durability during wear.
A simple paper-buttoned pocket sits at the right hip, presumably intended for personal effects.
Further, within the front placket, faint remnants of original Wehrmacht stamps are barely discernible. Though indecipherable, this government marking quietly yet undeniably authenticates the item's provenance.
The silhouette is striking in its refinement — almost officer-like in bearing. The forward-set sleeves are engineered to preserve mobility when the arms extend forward, yet create elegant drape when standing at ease — calculated patterning. The back features a deep yoke and pleat, naturally shaping the waist and conveying an understated elegance despite its field utility.
This — beauty as the consequence of functional refinement — is the essence of German military dress.
This example is constructed of 100% cotton. A dry-handled cotton twill, it possesses the lightness befitting tropical wear alongside the assured durability of military garments. The surface presents subtle diagonal weave, lending depth without heaviness, while the hand releases cleanly from the skin.
Despite its toughness, the fabric softens with wear, conforming to the body. Creases and contact marks become the garment's evolving character.
The colour is a muted khaki-olive — a warm, dusty tone evoking arid earth and sunlight. This blend of yellow and olive conveys a quality both weathered and authoritative, speaking quietly to its military purpose. The diagonal weave creates subtle tonal gradations in changing light, revealing refined variation from different angles. It is a palette that allows one to appreciate the distinctive character of military dress without affectation.
No size marking is present, though proportions suggest approximately Japanese size S–M. Given the overall compactness, those of smaller build should find it wearable without difficulty.
While traces of use — minor soiling and wear — are evident, the condition is remarkable for an item from the Second World War era. There are no defects that would impair wear; the jacket remains serviceable.
In recent years, interest in Wehrmacht items has intensified considerably. Yet the existing stock is vanishingly small, and supply cannot meet demand. This is a category with devoted collectors who rarely release their acquisitions — truly an archive piece for which competition is fierce.
Such items are not simply purchased; future acquisitions cannot be assured.
Whether as a functional garment, a collection piece, or a design reference, this represents an exceptional example.
