Estimated 1940s, SAS Camouflaged Windproof Smock.
A remarkable arrival. Rare deadstock.
This particular example was worn by personnel of the British Special Air Service.
The SAS camouflage pattern—said to be the prototype for what would later become Lizard and Tiger camouflage. As the original, its presence is singular. The pattern and colorway, in every regard, are without compromise.
Designed for airborne operations, where personnel would endure considerable wind resistance whilst descending under parachute, the fabric is a lightweight windproof weave. Not Ventile, yet woven from cotton of such density that it possesses the character of that fabric. The hand is altogether distinctive.
Four generous patch pockets define its remarkably spare aesthetic, yet the presence is commanding.
One understands why it is regarded as a cornerstone of British military kit.
The piece has ceased to circulate in the UK market, and specimens in private collections move rarely. Supply will only diminish further.
Where many surviving examples bear the marks of wear and soiling, this specimen remains in condition that must be considered exceptional. We have not encountered another across all sizes.
Marked size 7, which suggests a generous cut. In practice, however, the proportions wear considerably less large than one might anticipate. For those of fuller build, the sizing proves entirely wearable. For those of slighter frame, the oversized smock nature permits a studied, layered approach.
Deadstock condition permits no reservations. Those seeking an item in pristine state will find it here.
Such pieces do not emerge by circumstance of commerce. Future acquisitions cannot be assured.
Its trajectory is certain. This moment is unlikely to present itself again.
