A French indigo cotton linen twill work jacket, estimated from the 1940s.
A special arrival.
From French workwear, we present a piece constructed with a particularly distinctive pattern.
Most French work jackets in circulation typically feature a single chest pocket and two side pockets at the hem—three in total. This piece, however, departs from convention with large flapped chest pockets on both sides, an irregular detail worth noting.
The back construction is equally compelling. Four separate pieces have been sewn together, a technique likely employed to expand the body width. One suspects that at the time of manufacture, the available fabric was insufficient for a single-piece back, necessitating this pieced approach.
Garments of this era typically display the graceful A-line silhouette that widens toward the hem. This piece, however, presents an unusually pronounced box silhouette, rarely encountered in examples of this caliber.
It carries a singular character—as though a coverall and a cyclist's jacket had been distilled into one form. The silhouette and atmosphere are distinctly its own.
The fabric itself merits attention. Cotton and linen blended together—a combination both sought after and scarce in French vintage. While the linen content appears modest, even a small percentage presence transforms the colour development and the fabric's overall character entirely.
Time and oxidation have brought it to a light blue tone, though it almost certainly began life in the deep indigo particular to the dye. Ink blue work jackets are common enough, but indigo becomes increasingly scarce, and its market presence is difficult to quantify.
The sizing appears to occupy that golden proportion suited to Japanese frames, offering versatility across various builds. One might wear it close-fitting, or as an oversized drape for smaller figures—both approaches carry their own authority.
Fading, marks, scuffing, loose threads, small holes, repair traces—the piece carries perceptible age throughout. Yet the vintage character is fully available to be enjoyed. There are no significant flaws that would impede wear; it remains entirely wearable.
It functions equally well as wardrobe staple, collector's piece, or design reference—an uncompromising example. Pieces of this rarity arrive infrequently. If you have been searching, this occasion warrants attention.
