The Wehrmacht, or unified armed forces of Nazi Germany, encompassed three branches—the Heer (Army), Kriegsmarine (Navy), and Luftwaffe (Air Force)—and existed as a military organization from 1935 to 1945.
Following the First World War, the Treaty of Versailles imposed severe restrictions on German rearmament, particularly prohibiting military aviation. Yet Germany circumvented these constraints through progressive rearmament. In 1935, conscription was reintroduced and the Luftwaffe was publicly announced, bringing the state's full-scale military expansion into the open.
Thus constituted, the Wehrmacht functioned as the "military apparatus" executing Nazi expansionist policy, assuming its definitive role with the outbreak of the Second World War.
In the opening phase—from the invasion of Poland (1939) through the Western Blitzkrieg (1940)—coordinated mechanized and air operations accelerated tactical deployment. Yet as the war prolonged, strategic advantage eroded through failures to secure air superiority in the Battle of Britain (1940) and the grinding stalemate of the Eastern Front, ultimately yielding to attritional disadvantage.
Following German unconditional surrender in May 1945, Allied disarmament and occupation proceeded. On August 20, 1946, the Allied Control Council's Kontrollratsgesetz Nr. 34 legally dissolved and abolished the Wehrmacht.
Post-war Germany entered a period without armed forces before rearmament resumed separately within Cold War structures.
West Germany established the Bundeswehr in 1955; East Germany formed the NVA in 1956. Both were constituted as new forces fundamentally distinct in institutional framework and governing ideology from the Wehrmacht era.
German military dress of the period was refined through a division of labor that integrated function with appearance.
On the design side, specialists including artist Karl Diebitsch and graphic designer Walter Heck shaped aesthetic standards—silhouette, palette, ornamentation—particularly evident in pieces like the SS black uniform. Manufacturing was distributed among multiple contractors, including Hugo Boss, who managed mass production and quality control according to official specifications.
