Estimated 1960s, British-made green cotton smock.
Blacks Of Greenock — a name familiar to anyone with a taste for British vintage. An established UK outdoor manufacturer with roots reaching back generations.
Founded in 1861 on the banks of the River Clyde in southwest Scotland, the brand has long since evolved into a specialist tent maker. Smocks and similar items are no longer in their production line, making this piece genuinely scarce.
The design echoes the British military cadet smock aesthetic. Like its military counterpart, it carries a military green tonality, though time has softened the fabric with a gentle patina that only deepens its character.
Densely woven from substantial cotton, the cloth has an unexpectedly smooth hand — soft against the skin, substantial underfoot.
A generously proportioned front pocket sits at the chest. The waist features two independent large button pockets on either side. The sleeves employ a double-layer construction at the cuff, designed to resist wind passage.
Both the hood and waist feature drawstrings, allowing you to adjust the fit precisely as you prefer.
Unusually for smocks of this type, the piece is cut with raglan sleeves. This means even when worn deliberately oversized, the fabric will fall cleanly along the shoulder line, maintaining an elegant silhouette.
There are minor marks of use — small holes here and there — but nothing substantial enough to impede wear. This garment remains entirely wearable.
The proportions suit Japanese frames particularly well. It works equally convincingly worn true to size or deliberately loose.
A piece that rewards both approaches.
If you have been searching for a Blacks smock, this represents an opportunity worth considering.
