Today Barbour offers numerous iterations—the Bedale, the Border, and many others—yet this Solway Zipper stands as the progenitor of them all.
Here lies the jacket that marked Barbour's pivot from workwear manufacture into countrywear—their inaugural outdoor piece. In truth, everything began with this single garment.
Compared to later iterations such as the Bedale, this example employs a substantial 8-ounce oiled cloth, affording superior wind and cold resistance.
Whilst modern reproductions exist, the presence of an original vintage Barbour from that era possesses an unmistakable aura. The particular bearing it acquires when worn with the chin strap drawn and collar raised is, perhaps, incomparable.
The zip is YKK bar slider—a notably scarce specification, as most examples from this period employ ring sliders.
