A French-made cotton hunting gilet, estimated from the 1930s.
A special acquisition.
Within French workwear, the vast majority of pieces in circulation are work gilets. This, however, is a rare example worn during hunting expeditions.
It appears far less frequently than hunting jackets, making it a genuinely scarce item in the market.
Hunting, in that era, was practiced by the upper classes as a sport and leisure pursuit.
Rather than being produced as workwear, these pieces were worn by only a select few as sportswear and leisure attire. Consequently, manufacturers did not mass-produce them; instead, each was crafted as a bespoke commission—a luxury garment in its truest sense.
Constructed from the signature cotton of French workwear tradition.
Unlike the heavy, textured weave of cotton canvas, this gilet is fashioned from a softer, lighter-weight fabric that proves considerably more comfortable to wear.
While it may lack the refinement of corduroy, its remarkable versatility—wearable across all seasons—is genuinely appealing. Its casual nature is equally welcome.
Both front and back panels are constructed from this same thin cotton.
The front features four flap pockets with exposed buttons, and six front buttons in total.
Many gilets run small; this piece, however, falls into what we might call a golden size for Japanese proportions, and should accommodate a wide range of builds.
A cinch back on the rear panel also permits modest adjustment, should it be needed.
This example shows considerable wear throughout—scuffing, tears—and its condition allows one to fully experience the atmosphere and character of its era. While currently wearable, the tears present mean it is best approached as a piece to be cherished and carefully repaired over many years of use.
A hunting gilet of this caliber rarely surfaces. Should you be seeking something unconventional, this opportunity warrants your attention.
