Estimated 1940s, French-made grey wool gilet.
Woven in a notably wide-pitched herringbone twill—a genuinely intriguing piece. It leans toward the esoteric, but that's precisely what draws us to such unconventional examples.
The front panels are constructed from grey wool, whilst the back is rendered in black linen twill. A back in black linen is rather uncommon, we'd suggest.
Four flap-less pockets punctuate the front, with six buttons down the closure.
This reads as a golden size for the Japanese silhouette, accommodating a broad range of builds comfortably. The back features a cinch strap, permitting modest adjustment should it be necessary.
There is evidence of use—missing buttons, minor tears—yet nothing that impedes wear. It remains thoroughly wearable.
Such character is intrinsic to vintage pieces. Those inclined toward patina will recognize its appeal immediately. We'd encourage living with it over time, perhaps undertaking repairs as needed. That's the nature of this piece.
Should you be seeking it, consider this opportunity.
