Manufacturing spanned roughly a decade from the late 1930s through the 1940s, yet pieces in circulation continue to diminish. Yellow label Barbour still appears occasionally, but white label and earlier examples have become genuinely scarce.
Barbour now produces numerous models—Bedale, Border, and others—yet the Solway Zipper remains the progenitor from which all others emerged.
For decades, Barbour manufactured workwear exclusively. The Solway Zipper was their first venture into country and outdoor dressing. In a sense, everything that followed began with this single garment.
Modern reissues exist, yet the presence emanating from an original vintage Barbour of this era remains incomparable.
The double chin strap detail, visible through the yellow label period, is something truly discerning collectors understand intimately.
The zip is AERO.
Wear is evident throughout, though the zipper functions well and the piece remains entirely wearable.
A white label Barbour equipped with both hood and belt from this period is remarkably scarce.
No size marking appears, yet the measurements suggest a golden size for the Japanese frame—approachable for a range of builds.
The raglan construction means even with slight oversizing, the shoulders will fall cleanly without compromise.
