Estimated early 1950s Czechoslovak People's Army 'Clouds Camouflage Reversible Smock'.
A truly exceptional piece has arrived.
Today Czechoslovakia exists as two separate nations—the Czech Republic and Slovakia—but from 1918 to 1992 it existed as the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (known as the Czechoslovak Republic from 1918 to 1960).
This garment was worn by the Czechoslovak People's Army (CSLA) during that era.
CSLA = abbreviation for "Československá Lidová Armáda".
What immediately captures the eye is the distinctly characteristic camouflage pattern—the "Clouds Camouflage" unique to the Czechoslovak People's Army.
First adopted in the 1950s, this camouflage pattern was designated as the official dappled summer uniform. Garments bearing this pattern were worn from the 1950s through the 1970s by the Czechoslovak 22nd Airborne Brigade, infantry sharpshooters, and reconnaissance units.
Though this camouflage pattern remained in use for roughly twenty years, official production ceased in 1962.
What makes this piece extraordinarily rare is its reversible construction, with two distinct camouflage tones on either side.
One side features pale green ground with cloud shapes in dark and light olive; the reverse presents a grayish tan ground with clouds in brown and bright olive green—a piece that offers two distinct colorways in one.
The green side was intended for spring wear, while the gray side was intended for autumn wear.
We encourage you to alternate between them according to the season and your mood.
Among all camouflage patterns, the Clouds Camouflage ranks among the rarest.
Given how few examples survive globally, many will be seeing one for the first time.
We believe only a handful of these pieces circulate domestically in Japan.
While the camouflage pattern itself makes a strong visual statement, the details are refreshingly simple and utilitarian.
In its original configuration, this smock came with an oversized hood designed to wear over a helmet and gloves affixed to the cuff—but this example has been modified by a previous owner, with both elements removed.
The neckline features a shallow V-neck, allowing easy donning and doffing in the pullover smock style.
The through-stitched vertical patch pockets at the center and the narrow magazine pouches on the left sleeve are characteristic details of a sniper smock.
The hem originally would have featured a drawcord; this example shows the cord is missing.
Constructed in lightweight cotton, the piece offers easy movement and unstressed wear, making it remarkably suited to daily use.
Beyond its rarity, from a pure fashion perspective, this is a genuinely compelling garment—we encourage you to wear it without hesitation.
This is a piece best worn as a statement, paired with simplicity elsewhere.
No size marking is visible, but the piece corresponds roughly to Japanese XL to XXL.
Given the measurements, it offers substantial sizing—those with larger frames should have no issue wearing it comfortably.
As a military piece, it carries elegance even when worn generously oversized.
Originally designed as an over-smock to be worn atop a uniform, all examples possess generous proportions by nature. Both the armholes and body width offer ample room, making this accessible to a wide range of builds.
The piece shows signs of age—fading, discoloration, soiling, abrasion, loose threads, small holes, repair marks, missing buttons, and missing drawcord—but no substantial damage that would impair wear.
The Clouds Camouflage stands apart as a special pattern.
This singular piece, offering two distinct camouflage expressions, deserves to be rotated into your wardrobe based on season and styling.
This is not something money alone can procure, nor can we guarantee future availability.
Whether as functional wardrobe piece, collectible, or design reference, it is beyond question.
A rarity seldom encountered domestically or abroad—if you have been seeking such a piece, or if uncommon garments call to you, do not let this opportunity pass.
