This example bears the sought-after Lightning zip and Sammy Miller tag, though notably a red tag variant—quite rare among these already uncommon pieces. The standard Sammy Miller tag typically features black ground with gold embroidery.
The red tag variation circulates so scarcely that reliable documentation is nearly nonexistent. Having examined countless Belstaff pieces over the years, I have encountered only one other example comparable to this. Its rarity speaks for itself.
Oiled jackets of this era are characterized by a substantial, leather-like density to the fabric—markedly different from contemporary iterations.
Modern Trialmaster versions feature parallel chest pockets rather than the diagonal cut of this generation. The diagonal construction of this era possesses an undeniable elegance.
This appears to be that golden size suited to Japanese proportions, accommodating a broad range of builds. It carries itself well both as a precise fit and as an overpiece.
Visible wear is present throughout, though it remains entirely wearable. The belt—often absent on examples of this age—is complete.
The oil saturation remains sufficient, so reproofing need not be immediate. That said, reproofing by your own hand cultivates a deeper attachment to the piece, and we would encourage it.
