Barbour was established in 1894 by John Barbour in South Shields, in the northeast of England, as a British outdoor lifestyle brand.
While the brand now releases numerous items for town wear, it originated as workwear—providing durable oilcloth to dock workers, sailors, and fishermen.
In 1908, his son Malcolm Barbour created the first mail-order catalogue, and by 1917, such catalogue sales—including domestic and international orders—accounted for 75% of total revenue.
Duncan Barbour, Malcolm's son, possessed deep expertise in motorcycle wear. In 1936, he introduced a motorcycle suit. These suits quickly gained renown, and the British International team adopted them consistently between 1936 and 1977.
In 1939, when Duncan Barbour was called to military service, Malcolm Barbour and his wife took over management and developed the Ursula Suit, which became standard issue for the British submarine service. Captain George Phillips, commander of a U-class submarine, played a significant role in the suit's development.
Subsequently, in 1974, the Duke of Edinburgh granted the company its first Royal Warrant. In 1982, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II awarded a second Royal Warrant, and in 1987, the Prince of Wales granted a third.
The acquisition of Royal Warrants—notoriously difficult to obtain—speaks for itself regarding quality.
Only three individuals could confer Royal Warrants: Queen Elizabeth, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the Prince of Wales (now only the reigning monarch). Only warrant-holding brands may display the Royal Arms, yet these are scrutinised and renewed every five years—a rigorous process where even established holders risk losing status. That Barbour has maintained three warrants continuously is remarkable.
The piece presented here is an International Suit from the single-crest period, produced exclusively between 1974 and 1982. More significantly, it bears the coveted Gold Label—found only on early examples within that period—making it exceptionally rare.
Barbour distinguishes its models by use: the Bedale for riding, the Beaufort for hunting, and so forth. The International Suit was purpose-built as motorcycle wear.
Introduced in 1936, the International Suit enjoyed approximately forty years of adoption by the British International team through 1977.
At the 1954 SSDT (Scottish Six Days Trial), over 70% of competitors from Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland, Sweden, and Spain wore the International Suit.
Three years later at the Scottish Trial, every participant wore one—testament to its dominance.
