GUCCI is a luxury house founded in 1921 in Florence, Italy, by "Guccio Gucci".
The house began as a shop selling fine leather goods such as travel bags and equestrian equipment; today its range extends from bags, shoes and wallets to clothing and jewellery.
From 1930 onwards Gucci opened one new shop after another, but the shortages that came with the outbreak of the Second World War made leather difficult to obtain.
The substitute adopted at the time was "canvas", given a special coating before use, and its colourway is said to have won great popularity.
In 1951 the "green, red, green" web stripe, inspired by the girth of a saddle, appeared and became a familiar symbol of the house.
The founder, Guccio Gucci, died in 1953, and his sons took over the business.
In the 1980s a dispute over succession brought the house close to decline for a time, but it was rebuilt by "Tom Ford", who became Creative Director in 1994.
Gucci is sometimes called the "original designer brand", and is known as one of the earliest brands to put a designer's name on its products as a guarantee of quality.
Products from the era when the Gucci family still ran the house, known as Old Gucci (the 1970s to 1980s), remain highly sought after, with collectors all over the world.
