A wool duffle coat by OLD ENGLAND, estimated from the 1990s.
OLD ENGLAND was founded in Paris, France in 1867.
At the time, it was renowned for its exceptional range—not merely fashion, but the entire spectrum of life's necessities. It was, reportedly, the only establishment of its kind in Paris, and indeed in the world.
OLD ENGLAND made its debut in Japan in 1990.
Blending the authenticity of British tailoring with the understated elegance of French sensibility, the brand has long championed simple, impeccably crafted garments.
It remains an indispensable purveyor of French-inspired traditional style—pieces that sit effortlessly on the intellectually minded, immune to the vagaries of trend. A house with true historical weight.
This piece features 100% wool cloth from Moorbrook, a British textile mill nestled in the English countryside.
Moorbrook once possessed only four such looms in the world—machines of singular capability.
The cloth yielded by these looms demanded a slower pace, yet offered something their efficiency could never match: substantial weight, suppleness, genuine warmth, and the ability to weave lightweight herringbone with uncompromising integrity.
HERMES, the house synonymous with unrelenting quality, reportedly used no other fabric source.
Moorbrook later sought to move beyond mere textile production into finished goods, acquiring Inverallan. This duffle was born from that union.
Inverallan, and contemporaries like Glenfell who also produced duffle coats of that era, relied on Moorbrook cloth.
Yet Moorbrook's mastery lay in winter-weight fabrics; summer weights were not their strength.
Economic pressures came. The mill closed. The finest wool cloths of that generation simply vanished from the market.
This example bears the label typical of the 1990s—black ground with red embroidered branding.
Navy is the colour here: restrained, versatile, unmistakably refined.
It deepens rather than announces—a garment that dignifies its wearer.
The cut is generous; it will accommodate a fuller frame with ease.
Best worn with intention and proportion—let it fall naturally, as it was meant to be worn.
There is visible wear throughout, as expected of a piece three decades into its life.
The wool itself remains in fine condition—supple and warm. No damage that would impede wear.
This is, without overstatement, among the finest duffle coats ever made—a lifetime piece.
The OLD ENGLAND iteration stands alongside Inverallan's most celebrated examples. Both deserve equal reverence.
A staple through autumn and winter, and a relic of a moment when such things were made to last. Should you be seeking it, this is the time.
