A INVERTERE 'Crazy Pattern Wool Duffle Coat' from around the 1990s.
A special acquisition.
INVERTERE is an established British coat house founded in 1904.
It holds the distinction of being the first to develop a reversible coat, a technology considered quite innovative for its time.
The name INVERTERE derives from Latin, meaning 'to turn around,' embodying the spirit of its signature reversible design.
While INVERTERE gained renown for reversible coats, the duffle coat remains its most celebrated creation.
This piece is crafted from Moorbrook 100% wool cloth.
Moorbrook, a textile mill nestled in the English countryside, possessed one of only four looms of its kind remaining in the world at that time.
The cloth produced by these looms demanded inefficient production methods, yet yielded something remarkable: substantial, densely woven fabric with a softer hand, superior warmth, and the lightness of a herringbone weave.
HERMÈS, a house renowned for its uncompromising standards, sourced exclusively from Moorbrook.
Later, seeking to expand beyond textiles into finished goods, Moorbrook acquired INVERTERE, from which this duffle coat emerged.
Yet Moorbrook, primarily a purveyor of winter cloths, lacked strength in lighter fabrics.
Facing economic hardship, Moorbrook ceased operations, and INVERTERE followed into obscurity.
INVERTERE was revived in 2013, but duffle coats woven from Moorbrook cloth survive only from the 1990s and earlier.
For those who value authenticity, an old INVERTERE from its original era remains the only choice.
This example bears the old-style tag characteristic of the 1990s, now superseded in current production—a rarity among INVERTERE pieces.
Many collectors seek precisely this marker.
The colorway alone arrests attention—a combination we have not encountered before: navy, pistachio, brown, orange, and yellow in perfect harmony.
A singular duffle coat, truly one of a kind.
We recommend this piece especially to those drawn to garments of genuine character.
The sizing runs small, suitable for those of slighter build.
We encourage wearing it at true size for an appropriately mature silhouette.
There is visible wear throughout, yet the wool remains buoyant and full.
No structural damage impedes wear, and this coat remains ready for years ahead.
A duffle coat of world-class caliber, deserving of the description 'a coat for life.'
To speak of the duffle coat without INVERTERE is to miss its essence. This is that garment.
Vintage INVERTERE rarely enters the market. A masterwork among masterworks.
