A wool duffle coat by INVERTERE, estimated from the early 1990s.
A special arrival.
INVERTERE is a heritage coat house established in 1904 in England.
It holds the distinction of having developed the world's first reversible coat—a revolutionary technique for its time.
The name INVERTERE derives from Latin, meaning "to turn about," embodying the principle of its signature reversible design.
While INVERTERE gained renown for its reversible coats, the duffle coat remains its most celebrated creation.
This particular piece is constructed from 100% wool fabric by Moorbrook, a textile manufacturer situated in the English countryside.
Moorbrook once possessed only four of these specialized looms in existence worldwide.
Though these looms demanded inefficient production methods, they yielded fabric of substantial weight, remarkable softness, genuine warmth, and the ability to weave lightweight herringbone.
HERMES, renowned for its uncompromising approach to quality, sourced exclusively from Moorbrook.
Moorbrook later shifted its direction toward manufacturing finished goods, acquiring INVERTERE in the process. This duffle coat emerged from that union.
However, Moorbrook specialized in winter textiles and lacked strength in summer fabrics.
Economic pressures led to the company's closure, and INVERTERE, its subsidiary, disappeared with it.
INVERTERE was revived in 2013, yet duffle coats made with Moorbrook fabric exist only in examples from the 1990s and earlier.
For those seeking authenticity, an original INVERTERE from that era is genuinely worthy of acquisition.
This piece carries the same tag as current productions from around the 1990s.
Minor differences exist—notably the absence of a size label on the original, and care instructions that differ from contemporary standards.
The color is a burgundy tone, uncommon for a duffle coat.
A shade that conveys both refinement and understated gravity.
Cut with a generous fit, it accommodates larger frames without compromise.
Worn at true size, it will present with mature authority and ease.
While showing the patina of wear, the wool remains in sound condition.
Without significant damage that would impede wearing, it is fully wearable still.
A duffle coat worthy of the designation "a lifetime companion"—representing the pinnacle of the form.
One cannot speak of the duffle coat without acknowledging INVERTERE. This is such a piece.
Early INVERTERE rarely reaches the market. A masterwork among masterworks.
