A wool duffle coat by {{INVERTERE}}, circa 1990s.
A special acquisition.
{{INVERTERE}} is an established British coat house founded in 1904.
The brand holds the distinction of having developed the world's first reversible coat—a revolutionary technique at the time.
The name itself, derived from Latin, means "to turn about," embodying the spirit of their signature reversible coat.
While {{INVERTERE}} earned renown for its reversible coat, the duffle remains its most celebrated expression.
This piece is constructed from 100% wool fabric by {{Moorbrook}}, a rural English textile mill.
{{Moorbrook}} once possessed four of only a handful of looms of its kind in the world.
Though these looms produced fabric at a slower pace, they yielded cloth of remarkable substance—dense yet soft, inherently warm, and light in hand. The herringbone weave they produced was exceptional.
{{HERMES}}, a house renowned for its uncompromising standards, chose to use exclusively {{Moorbrook}} fabric.
Later, as {{Moorbrook}} expanded beyond textile production into finished goods, they acquired {{INVERTERE}}. This duffle was born from that union.
Yet {{Moorbrook}} remained primarily a weaver of winter cloths, less versed in lighter-weight fabrics for warmer seasons.
Economic pressures mounted. {{Moorbrook}} ceased operation, and {{INVERTERE}}, held within its subsidiary structure, disappeared from view.
{{INVERTERE}} resurged in 2013, but duffles woven from {{Moorbrook}} fabric exist only among examples from approximately the 1990s and earlier.
For those who value authenticity, an original {{INVERTERE}} from that era remains essential.
This piece bears the old tag characteristic of {{INVERTERE}} duffles from the 1990s—distinct from current iterations, and rare.
Many seek precisely this label.
The color presents as black with brown tones woven throughout—difficult to convey in words, yet unmistakably distinctive.
A nuanced, layered palette; rare to encounter.
The cut runs generous, accommodating a fuller frame with ease.
It rewards being worn at true scale, with the composure that befits a garment of such provenance.
The wool carries expected signs of wear, yet remains supple and resilient.
No significant damage impedes its use. It remains ready for years of service.
A duffle coat of the highest order—one that justifies the promise of a lifetime garment.
The duffle cannot be properly discussed without {{INVERTERE}}. This is such a piece.
Original {{INVERTERE}} of this era seldom reaches market. A masterwork among masterworks.
If you have sought this, do not overlook the moment.
