A wool duffle coat by INVERTERE, estimated from the 1990s.
A special arrival.
INVERTERE is a storied British coat house established in 1904.
The brand pioneered the reversible coat, a technique that was revolutionary for its time.
The name itself derives from the Latin "invertere," meaning to turn about—a fitting reference to the reversible coat that defines the house.
Though INVERTERE remains celebrated for its reversible coats, the duffle coat stands as perhaps its most iconic form.
This piece is constructed from 100% wool cloth by Moorbrook, a textile manufacturer situated in the English countryside.
Moorbrook was one of four houses worldwide that possessed the specific looms required for their particular craft.
The cloth produced by these looms demands considerable time, but yields a fabric of uncommon substance—dense yet supple, warm yet remarkably light. The herringbone weave is executed with a finesse few can match.
HERMES, a house known above all for its devotion to quality, chose to work exclusively with Moorbrook cloth.
When Moorbrook elected to move beyond textiles and into finished goods, they acquired INVERTERE. From this union came the duffle coat before you.
Yet Moorbrook's strength lay in winter cloth; summer weights were never their domain.
Economic difficulties ultimately proved insurmountable. Moorbrook ceased operations, and INVERTERE, caught in its decline, vanished with it.
INVERTERE was revived in 2013, but duffle coats constructed from Moorbrook cloth exist only from the 1990s and earlier.
For those who seek authenticity, an old INVERTERE from that era represents something increasingly rare.
This example carries an original label from the 1990s—a tag quite different from what the contemporary house now produces. Scarce in this form.
The green, yellow, and red colourway speaks unmistakably of INVERTERE's aesthetic. For those attuned to vintage, such details quicken the pulse.
Many search for a coat bearing precisely this label.
The colour is navy—practical, versatile, enduring.
A measured tone that brings gravity and composure. A coat of quiet refinement.
Many vintage duffles run large; this example sits notably smaller, making it a rarity for the Japanese frame.
It will suit a variety of builds comfortably.
Worn at true scale, it carries the bearing of maturity.
The coat bears the expected marks of wear, yet the wool remains supple and resilient.
There are no significant defects that would compromise wear. Years remain ahead of this piece.
This is a duffle coat that answers to no tradition save its own. A piece worthy of a lifetime.
One cannot speak credibly of the duffle without having known INVERTERE. Such is its station.
An old INVERTERE, rarely encountered in the market. Among the finest examples of the form.
If you have searched for such a coat, this moment warrants attention.
