A INVERTERE wool duffle coat, circa 1990s.
A special acquisition.
INVERTERE is a heritage British coat house, founded in 1904.
The brand holds the distinction of having developed the world's first reversible coat—a technique considered revolutionary for its time.
The name itself derives from Latin, meaning 'to turn about,' a reference to the reversible coat that defines the house.
While INVERTERE is recognized for its reversible coats, the duffle coat remains its most celebrated offering.
This piece is constructed from 100% wool cloth by Moorbrook, a textile mill situated in the English countryside.
Moorbrook operated among only four such looms in existence globally at the time.
Cloth produced on these looms demands patience—efficiency is sacrificed for substance: a dense weave, softness, warmth, and a lightweight herringbone structure.
Even HERMES, renowned for its uncompromising standards, relied exclusively on Moorbrook cloth.
Moorbrook later shifted its focus from cloth production to finished goods, acquiring INVERTERE in the process. This duffle coat emerged from that union.
However, Moorbrook's expertise lay in winter-weight fabrics; summer cloths remained beyond its reach.
Economic pressures led to the mill's closure, and INVERTERE, then under its ownership, disappeared with it.
INVERTERE resurfaced in 2013, yet duffle coats constructed from Moorbrook cloth exist only among pieces produced through the 1990s.
For those seeking authenticity, an old INVERTERE from that era merits serious consideration.
This example bears a rare tag from the 1990s—markedly different from the current iteration. The green, yellow, and red palette reflects INVERTERE's character, a livery that speaks to the vintage enthusiast.
Many seek out this tag specifically.
The colour is navy—a versatile foundation. A restrained, mature tone that deepens any consideration of refinement.
This coat runs generous in scale, accommodating a fuller frame without compromise.
Best worn at true size, allowing its proportions to convey understated authority.
Signs of wear are present throughout, though the wool retains its substance and suppleness.
No significant damage impedes wear; this coat remains thoroughly serviceable.
A duffle coat befitting the designation 'lifetime piece'—among the finest ever constructed.
INVERTERE cannot be omitted from any serious discussion of the duffle coat.
Old INVERTERE pieces rarely enter the market. A reference point among references.
Those searching should regard this as an opportunity.
