This coat was constructed using rubber-proofed fabric as a raincoat. Rubber-proofed coats themselves are quite rare, but this piece carries the additional distinction of an original black colorway—a rarity among vintage items. Not a later dye, but the original finish.
The chin strap and hood, components often lost to time, remain intact, ensuring the waterproof and windproof properties remain uncompromised.
There is something about this coat that feels contemporary even now, yet undeniably of another era. Worn with the chin strap fastened and collar raised, it carries an unmistakable presence.
Rubber-proofed fabric—developed by Charles Macintosh in 1823—represents the world's first waterproof textile. Two thin layers of fabric are bonded with molten natural rubber, then heated to create the final material. From a waterproofing standpoint, every seam requires hand-applied tape on its interior surface, making this an extraordinarily labor-intensive fabric to work with.
The piece runs generously in size, accommodating larger frames without concern.
The shoulders employ a raglan construction, allowing the piece to be worn with some ease even oversized, with the shoulder line remaining naturally positioned. This is among its most valued qualities.
