A circa 1920s British-made two-tone striped college jacket.
A special acquisition.
The College (School) Jacket, a cornerstone of British vintage.
With very few examples surviving and commanding considerable prices in its home market, consistent stock of such pieces remains challenging.
The single-breasted blazer is said to have originated from the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race held on the Thames in London in 1877.
The etymology of "Blazer" itself is said to be connected to the uniform jacket worn by the boat club at St. John's College, Cambridge University. The uniform colour was a vivid scarlet—a "Blaze"—and from this the term "Blazer" was born.
College jackets, including this example, carry forward the original spirit of the blazer. They were worn as formal wear at schools and clubs throughout Britain and in countries under its cultural influence—in essence, a uniform.
The most visible hallmark of a college jacket is undoubtedly its striped pattern.
Each school or club would employ the colours of its flag as vertical stripes, or apply piping to the collar—allowing individual identity and sensibility to be expressed through colour and design. This is precisely what has endeared college jackets to so many, and what makes them distinctive.
The construction also differs slightly from the blazer. The back panel is cut from a single piece with no centre seam, and the front lacks lining—a single-weight construction.
Further details include three front buttons, three patch pockets in total, and sleeves without functioning buttons—these are considered standard specifications.
Despite its uniform heritage, the college jacket remains inseparable from British rock and mod culture.
Favoured by iconic British musicians—The Rolling Stones, Blur, Oasis, The Beatles among them—it is a piece worthy of wearing.
This particular example possesses the hallmark characteristics outlined above, yet offers something special in its execution.
Single-piece construction, unlined front, three front buttons, three patch pockets, sleeveless cuffs—all the essential college jacket details are present and accounted for.
What distinguishes this piece is the rarity of its monochrome striping in a bold width. The palette avoids colour clashes with other garments, allowing it to layer effortlessly and sit naturally on the body—a quality we find particularly appealing.
Given the boldness of striped patterns, the restraint of monochrome here works decidedly in its favour.
While many examples feature shoulder padding, this jacket does not. This allows for a more relaxed shoulder line and prevents an overly formal silhouette, making it better suited for casual wear.
This piece is constructed from 100% wool.
Wool is recognised as a natural insulator, with fibres that trap air and provide excellent thermal regulation. It keeps you warm in cold seasons.
Wool is also known for its durability. With proper care, it will retain its appearance and function for years to come.
The fabric is a soft, lightweight wool sateen with minimal itch—those who find vintage wool uncomfortable should find this entirely wearable.
The colourway is ecru and black in two-tone.
The soft warmth of ecru paired with the sophistication of black creates a contrast that is both classical and contemporary.
Many college jackets present challenging colour combinations for styling. This example, with its restrained two-colour striping, is comparatively approachable—such pieces are uncommon.
Traditional design and fine fabric in conversation. A jacket that marries classical proportion with modern sensibility, it commands presence as a wardrobe statement.
No size label is present, though we believe it corresponds to approximately XS to S.
Judging by the actual measurements, this runs small. Those of petite build should find it entirely wearable.
We encourage wearing it at true size.
There is evidence of wear—minor marks, rubbing, and loose threads—but no substantial damage that would compromise wear. It remains entirely serviceable.
No discussion of British vintage is complete without the College Jacket.
Particularly in this restrained colourway and bold stripe, the rarity speaks for itself.
Worthy of wardrobe or collection alike.
This is a piece we rarely acquire. Should you have been seeking one, this is the moment.
